Is Dehydration Delaying Your Progress?

Hydration: A term used to descibe your body's ability to manage water. Water management at every level down to the individual cells. Drinking only water is not sufficient to ensure optimal hydration, especially those who exercise regularly. Water is a major part of most of the body's cells except for the fat cells, it cushions and and lubricates the brain and the joints, transporting nutrients to the body and carrying waste away from the body.

"Many people underestimate the importance of water to the body"

Brain- 95% water

Blood- 82% water

Lungs- 90% water

Proper hydration is essential for healthy blood flow, proper kidney function, proper sodium?potassium electrolyte balance and proper digestion. A tiny 2% drop can cause a small but critical shrinkage of the brain which can impair neuromuscuclar coordination, decrease coordination and slows down thinking.Other problems linked to dehydration are a reduce in endurance, a decrease in strength, slow musclular response and cramping.

"Mild dehydration is the most common cause of day time fatigue"

Benefits of drinking more water:

Healthier skin- keeping hydrated keeps the wrinkles away

Healthier teeth and bones

Healthier Joints- synovial fluid contains water, when dehydrated less fluid is available to protect the joints. Exercising and becoming dehyrated when putting pressure on the joints will lead to complications and a lot of pain.

Healthier digestive system- the more water you drink the more it benefits digestion of food, the water helps to metabolise food, reduces the risk of constipation and helps transports nutrients. Bodybuilders will be eating more calories and meals per day then the average person and also training more often, so it is crucila for them to consume large quantitys of water to keep things working properly.

Weight Loss

A decrease in water causes fat deposits to increase. Reduction of water decreases the efficiency of the kidneys, resulting in kidney functions being shunted to the liver. The liver metabolises stored fat into usable energy, when its busy doing the work of the kidneys it stops being able to metabolise fat at the same pace, less fat is metabolised and therefore stored keeping yu from losing weight.

Water Retention

The body perceives dehydration as a threat to survival and begins to hold on to every drop.Water is stored in extracellular spaces (outside the cell) which can result in swollen extremities (feet, legs, and hands).Diuretics offer a temporary solution, but may cause more harm than good if abused. Why? Diuretics will cause the elimination of water, along with many essential nutrients. Also the body will perceive this conditioning as a threat and replace the lost water at the first opportunity; this causes bloating and fluid retention once again. Regularly drinking plenty of water will eliminate this problem.
